RUNNING OUT OF TIME
visions on my mind

Classes for today were over, and the young man had plenty of time before training started to chill out for a bit. The yard was the perfect place to do so. A lot of people still had to attend some lecture, or preferred to go explore the town. The school year had just started and the freshmen were still able to discover exciting things about Wolf Creek. After two years, he had seen enough of it. At least the shady part of town, where the activities that were going on were even more shady. The times where he would go into town were long gone. So he just stayed in the yard, smoking.

Sometimes regular cigarettes and.. Sometimes not. Since training was only in a couple of hours, he figured he had time the more pleasant variant of smoking. With skills that gave away he had been doing this regularly, he had rolled up a joint. Romeo had taken some distance from the main area, secluding himself before lighting up. Happy 420.

Don't bless me father for I have sinned

All day she had been waiting for this particular break in her schedule. She didn’t know who was responsible for planning in all her courses – she was, but she always did it last minute and wasn’t aware that she had the chance to decide at what hours her classes were – and she had been complaining all day about this one particular person that wouldn’t grant her some rest. In the morning, she’d had a bulk of classes in which everyone had been surprised to see her. The surprise on everyone’s faces had caused her to regret her attendance immediately, since now her teachers would know that she was still alive and was still going to classes, while not a cell in her body was planning on attending any further ones. But I am drifting – the point was that Sareth had been looking out to this particular break because this break was on 420 and everyone who knew Sareth just barely knew that 420 was her personal holiday.

After her last class, she had rushed out of the building while already grabbing everything she needed from the pockets in her leather jacket. While walking, she put all the ingredients together to create the perfect wrap, filled with greens. Since she was too occupied with the treasure between her fingers, she paid no attention whatsoever to her surroundings and just walked a straight line to the spot where she usually lit her 420. It was only upon arrival that she realized she never celebrated 420 during school hours alone, and that she wasn’t alone now.

Romeo.

The last couple of weeks, she had partly successfully tried not to think about them, or what went down during the holidays. With the right amount of mind altering substances one could forget anything, and this was exactly what she had devoted herself to doing ever since she kicked Romeo out. She hadn’t given herself any time to reflect on the event, and up until this point she had thought she was still mad at him, but upon seeing him, she realized that this was no longer the case. Rather, she felt guilty, and somewhat ashamed for her behavior and the ridiculous claims she had thrown his way.

Of course, this was something she wouldn’t share with him – not now, not sober, at least. Thus she just stuck Mary Jane between her lips and grabbed her lighter. As she lit the joint, she checked the time on her phone. She inhaled, and blowing out the smoke, she finally said something to him after three weeks of complete silence.

“Happy 421.”

Of course he should have known. Dealing weed on campus meant knowing there were a whole lot more smokers than normal people would suspect. Naturally, it shouldn’t come as a surprise he wouldn’t be the only one celebrating 420. There was one particular person that had joined him almost every day last academic year. Someone he had bonded with more than he would ever admit. Because she had eventually stabbed him in the back, during the summer break. Three weeks ago, to be more specific.

Sareth.

They had ignored each other ever since the incident at her house. There was not much to say about it though. They had both crossed a line. Would one of them say sorry? Most likely not. Pretending that nothing happened was more their thing. So when she finally spoke, he granted her a semi-warm smile. ”First week of classes and you’re already out here smoking? Great first impression on the newbies”, He said with a chuckle, obviously joking. Wasn’t he doing the exact same thing? Right.

Sareth hadn’t really expected Romeo to throw a fit. Now of course, what had went down during the summer could definitely be called ‘a fit,’ but both of them had been so out-of-their-minds high that he had had trouble storming out after their fight and Sareth had to make three attempts before slamming the door shut after he finally did. They weren’t that fucked right now. She didn’t believe this was Romeo’s first toke of the day, but a little weed never hurt nobody, and certainly not her and Romeo. Surely it wouldn’t make them act like they did then.

So when she had greeted him as if nothing happened, he confirmed her expectations - hopes, perhaps? - by coolly smiling, something that in and of itself was something he would only do when things were ‘okay.’

“First week of classes and you’re already out here smoking?” he replied, chuckling. “Great first impression on the newbies.”

She laughed before taking another drag from the joint.

“It would be rude not to show them this college in its full potential on their first day.”

Another drag. Blowing out the smoke, she observed the heavy cloud forming between them. When the cloud faded, for the first time during their conversation she looked up at Romeo and took a deep breath before speaking again, smiling.

“Besides, I’ll give it three days before the first one joins us.” As she spoke, she remembered how quickly she had discovered this spot in her first year.

Could they just pretend what had gone down at her place just hadn’t happened at all? Perhaps. It was hard, though, as he had felt betrayed. Their fight hadn’t been pretty, thanks to whatever cocktail of substances had been running through their veins at the time. His memories were also blurred, which was not really a surprise. He just knew it had left him bitter and sad, two emotions he didn’t want to deal with, honestly. So he just tried not to think about it too much. Which was not the easiest task, especially not now she was sitting right in front of him. Though he also knew starting the discussion all over again would cause even more harm. If they could just chill out and smoke, then maybe their friendship was still salvable.

The conversation was as random as they needed it to be. While she was talking, Romeo inhaled some more, noticing how the relaxing effects were already starting to settle in. Did he bring snacks? Of course he did. Somewhere in his backpack. He was just too lazy to look for them now. ”I do hope so. It’s a great way to scout potential new clients”, He said with a slight shrug. Selling weed was easy, though he wouldn’t sell to just anyone. First he had to determine if those newbies were worthy of his time and attention, right?
